019: Glassblowing With Josh Raiffe

Josh Raiffe’s work will take your breath away. An artist, designer and incredible glassblower, Josh’s work has been featured on runways at Paris, New York, London and Tokyo Fashion Week.

You might already know his designs from logic-defying collaborations with Coperni and PatBo or hanging from the arms of celebs like Miss Doja.

Today, he’s here to share his niche obsession with glass blowing and some of the creative tips he’s picked up along the way.

That’s Niche: Glassblowing

Josh’s Expertise:

I am an artist, glass blower, designer and I make glass bags.

I went to college for sculpture but fell in love with glass and switched majors. I got a job in a chandelier factory. I apprenticed for Deb Czeresko (winner of Blown Away Season 1). I taught a bunch of classes and assisted many artists after college. I slowly began to fabricate for other artists and designers. Making sculptures, lighting and vases.

During this time, I would sell my own objects occasionally, but in the last few years, I have been lucky enough to support myself by selling my work through galleries and my website.

Fall in love with practising.

If you love to practise you will want to do it without even thinking.

Take pride in seeing yourself improve.

Your progress won’t always be constant, so celebrate your growth when it happens.

Ignore limits.

Kobayashi didn’t know what the record was for hotdog eating and he smashed it.

Don’t care what others think.

It took me a long time to embody this one and I still have more work to do. It’s scary but it’s amazing what you can accomplish when you put yourself out there.

I am not the best glass blower or artist. And I know I will never be, but I’ll often compete with myself, so I know I’m always trying to do the best I can.
